- THE EU DIRECTIVE REQUIRES THE UK TO INCREASE ITS
RENEWABLE ENERGY MIX TO 15% BY 2020
- ELECTRICITY AND HEAT GENERATION EMIT 24% OF UK CO2 EMISSIONS
The UK electricity generating industry is mandated to make Green House
Gas savings of a minimum of 15.4% by 2015/16. To achieve this
Renewable Obligation Certificates [ROCs] will be issued to UK electricity
generators who supply renewable electricity, the scheme to run till 2037.
The number of ROCs accredited per megawatt hour (MWh) are dependent
on the generation type. Electricity from a dedicated energy crop is entitled
to two ROCs per MWh.
- TRANSPORTATION EMITS 13% OF UK CO2 EMISSIONS
The UK Road Transport sector has an individual binding target to increase
its renewable energy mix (Bio-Fuel) to 10% by 2020. To achieve this target
the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation [RTFO] was introduced in 2008.
This obliges road transport fuel producers to include a mandated
percentage of biofuel in their fuel mix or pay a penalty.
